Tara Carlsen teaches Mathematics at an alternative public school in the Niles school district in southwest Michigan. Tara recognized early on in her professional career that the standard education format for the classroom of the American public school system didn't prepare students for a world beyond academics and only barely met their educational needs. Having started her teaching career with an at-risk student demographic, Tara endeavored to expose them to the benefits of giving back through service learning. In 2007, Tara established the Reaching for the Reins program at a local area equestrian center. Over the course of the program's duration she carefully collected and meticulously reconstructed her students stories into a memoir on their collective success in overcoming their individual struggles. Written in a style reminiscent of Kim Meeder, these stories remove the stigma associated with the kids who fall through the cracks. This is Tara's first book.
