Service-learning is an educational activity or program that encourages students' learning and growth through community service and volunteer based activities. Some of the methods used in service-learning programs are donation drives ranging from food, money, clothing, toys or any number of commodities to share with those less fortunate; correspondence with the elderly, service men and women, or individuals who are sick; volunteer work with an emphasis on improving the community; assisting non-profit organizations; or working with the elderly or those with special needs to improve the quality of their lives.

The purpose of the American educational system is commonly accepted as readying students to become contributing members of their communities. Service-learning is an effective method of teaching students to develop a focus on becoming valued participants in their communities and should be an integral part of education.
